Although a visionary group, made up of local officials, business and community leaders exists under the name 'Urban Salisbury', anyone interested in thier efforts, or the revitalization of the downtown area in general, is welcome to share thier thoughts here.

xx Developing Residential Housing In Downtown Area
« Thread started on: Nov 20th, 2002, 1:48pm »

I think it's a great idea. Whether primarily inhabited by students, retirees, local business and government employees, or a mix of all of these, I've always thought the area would only be complimented by an increased population of residents. These ideas are now being tossed around much more frequently than ever, and it appears to be quickly approaching the stage of becoming reality. At least I hope it is.

As a compliment to, and result of this new community, I would like to see the area support a thriving nightlife. Granted, It's unlikely that Salisbury's downtown area, will ever be anything like the similar areas and bar districts of larger cities User Image , and I suspect many of the older folks in the community would be aghast at the thought of any more nightlife of that nature. Salisbury seems to have a lot of bars, but to many of the people I've talked to, what's offered really isn't very appealing. Many, if not most of the cities that boast successful 'business district' communities, follow the hustle and bustle of the workday, with the transition to an awakening of nightlife in those areas, as an accepted and crucial part of thier success equations. I hope to see it here, although I may be a bit too old to enjoy it by the time it reaches a ripe fruitation. I don't believe it to be a poison apple, I see it as a neccessity of sustenance.

I wonder if others share that vision.

Dude,

Dig it. Turn it into a self sustaining community of any sort. You need people there to make the stores work. One big yuppie community! or Dorm! You need to folks to fleece to make it thrive (Retirees don't spend it). Check out other towns in MD and VA they are fabricating fake downtowns in Townhouse communities (Reston VA, Rockville, Gaithersburg). It's all the rave!

Other places to note in MD that have failing old downtown sections are places are like Cumberland (Also open to car traffic in El Centro). This town doesn't get it either.

P.S. Plow Frank Purdues Chicken Feed Emporium and Build something there as well. They already destroyed that side of downtown, or was that becauuse it was the Afro American section? We need a joint that has an all in one nightlife and what a better place to blend. El Centro Rules.

One more thought while we are dreaming.

How about a least a motel in El Centro. With any night life the joint could capitalize on OC summer overflow and promote DT Salisbury as an alternative to the $150.00 per night Roach Motel Stays with a 3night Minimum in Summer at the Beach.

Get it on baby! It's goin down! Remember Woolworth's? Well then, you'll be passing on one of these days and people in Salisbury will still need more bars! grin

Seriously, what's wrong with this place?

Let's get it on!! undecided
